We went with fantaSea for their Great Barrier Reef Experience only because they had a two for one deal and we saved 190 dollars.  In some ways this company was better than Reef Magic in Cairns.  fantaSea had a much larger pontoon and snorkelling area and their semi-submersible was better as well.  Unfortunately their buffet did not even compare.  The staff were great and their lycra suits were free for the usage and Reef Magic charged 6 dollars for each suit. fantaSea also have free pick up service and the other company charged 14 dollars each way.  The day that we wanted to go out this trip was booked up with cruise people and so we went the day before.  We checked out the knots of wind speed for that day and it said that it would be 12, but it turned out to be much higher.
When we actually got out to the reef which is out in the open water there were big waves and they would slap you right in the face and it can be quite intimidating for a novice swimmer.  It freaked Dax out and he did not get much snorkelling done in the morning.
In the afternoon the tide calmed right down and the snorkelling was great.  We saw some different fish and many colourful giant clams and some different coral which was more colourful in this area of the reef.  We saw the largest fish and it was about 9 feet long and it was a grouper, it makes a habit of hanging around the pontoon and it is gigantic.  I could snorkel every day just for the sheer pleasure of seeing this exotic under-sea-world.  Not to mention that the exercise is pretty good especially in higher tides.  I can’t wait to snorkel now in the Caribbean.
