Mandela Rhodes Place – Capetown, South Africa

This is a great hotel which is right down in the city centre and close to many things like the V & A Waterfront and Table Mountain.  We had a great view of Table and you can watch the clouds run off the top of this massive piece of granite.  The hotel is a tribute to Nelson Mandela and the inside of the hotel looks exactly like a prison with catwalks that run across the hollow centre and the colors are prison grey and the railings look straight out of a prison with stainless steel.  Your number of your rooms is a cell block number.  When you get into your room though it no longer resembles a prison and they are very comfortable.  We had a two bedroom/ two bathroom condo with a full kitchen and laundry.  There is a Pick and Pay grocery store about a 7 minute walk away from the hotel.  We had a very large room with two coaches in our living room.  I got this room off of for a very good rate about 100 US for each night.  My niece had a studio unit which was huge and very ultra modern with a huge island in the middle and it resembled a New York loft style studio.  The hotel was very helpful at the front desk and even printed Robben island tickets off for me from their front desk.  My only complaints about this hotel is that it does not have free internet you can buy cards if you wish and the fitness room only had one treadmill that was in operation and I went down 3 times in 3 days to run and all 3 times there was a line-up for the treadmill.
